A Lesson Learned the Hard Way: Our Unexpected Adventure at Dudhsagar Falls, Goa
Travel is one of the best teachers in life. During our Master's program, our class organized a 6-day educational trip to Goa by train. The itinerary covered the first two days, but the third day was completely free for us to explore on our own.
A group of 11 friends decided to visit the famous Dudhsagar Falls, located approximately 85 km from our stay in Calangute. To make the journey convenient, six of us rented three scooters while the remaining five traveled by car.
The car group left first, while our scooter group got delayed because one of our friends wasn't ready on time. By the time we started, we were already about an hour behind the others.
We were cruising comfortably at around 50–60 km/h and were just about 30 minutes away from our destination when disaster struck.
A pickup truck suddenly overtook us on a flyover and immediately took a sharp left exit. The scooter riding ahead of me applied panic brakes. Unfortunately, my scooter's brakes were not in the best condition, and despite my efforts, I crashed into the scooter in front of me.
Both my passenger and I fell onto the road. Thankfully, our injuries were minor, but my female passenger was badly shaken and started crying uncontrollably. Seeing her in that condition scared me more than the accident itself.
After calming down, we visited a nearby medical store, bought bandages and first-aid supplies, and treated our injuries before continuing the journey.
Meanwhile, our friends who had reached earlier informed us to book the official jeep safari tickets for Dudhsagar Falls. We made an online booking worth ₹1,500 for our group while traveling.
However, when we finally arrived, we were informed that we were 15 minutes late. The last jeep entry was at 3:30 PM, and despite having valid tickets, we were not allowed to enter.
Our other group had already gone ahead, and due to poor network coverage, we couldn't contact them.
After traveling so far and facing an accident, we were extremely disappointed.
The Stranger Named Krishna
While we were deciding what to do next, a man approached us and introduced himself as Krishna.
"I can take you to Dudhsagar by train," he said.
Initially, we refused. It sounded risky and unofficial. But after considering how far we had come, we reluctantly agreed. Several other tourists—including a group from Mumbai, a couple from Delhi, and some Russian travelers—were also joining him.
We negotiated the price to ₹600 per person and assumed we would be traveling in some sort of tourist train.
We were completely wrong.
Things Start Getting Suspicious
Krishna led us to a railway platform. Instead of a tourist train, we found ourselves squeezing between regular train coaches to reach another platform.
The train we boarded was overcrowded and packed with passengers.
Out of curiosity, I asked a fellow traveler where the train was headed.
"Delhi," he replied.
My heart sank.
I immediately started looking for Krishna, but he had mysteriously disappeared.
At that moment, we genuinely thought we had made a terrible mistake.
The train eventually crossed the Dudhsagar area and stopped a few kilometers ahead.
Out of nowhere, Krishna reappeared and instructed us to get off.
We then walked nearly 2 kilometers back along the railway track toward Dudhsagar Falls.
Soon we reached the famous viewpoint where scenes from the movie Chennai Express were filmed. The view was breathtaking and partly made up for the stress we had endured.
After spending some time there, Krishna led us further into the forest through an unmarked route. We hiked downhill through dense jungle until we reached a beautiful natural pool beneath the falls.
Many tourists started swimming while the rest of us simply enjoyed the scenery.
For a brief moment, everything felt worth it.
The Nightmare Return Journey
Around 6 PM, Krishna announced that it was time to leave.
Darkness was already setting in.
We walked several kilometers to a remote railway station where Krishna claimed a train would take us back.
Unfortunately, we had missed it.
When another train arrived, we attempted to board, but the ticket checker immediately stopped us and informed us that Krishna was bringing tourists to Dudhsagar illegally.
We were forced to get off.
The same thing happened with the next train.
At this point, panic began setting in.
There was almost no mobile network, and we had no idea how to return. Fortunately, the station had limited Wi-Fi access, allowing us to briefly contact our friends and explain our situation.
They were equally worried.
Krishna then led us about a kilometer away from the station to a narrow downhill path.
He instructed us to sit quietly, avoid using our phones, and wait.
It felt like something out of a movie.
When another train arrived, we tried boarding again but were caught and sent back.
We returned to our hiding spot and waited in silence.
Finally, after nearly 30 more minutes, another train arrived. This time, everyone managed to board successfully.
We sat quietly, hoping not to attract attention.
When the ticket checker walked through the train, nobody spoke.
Thankfully, we were not removed.
At around 9 PM, the train finally started moving toward our destination.
For the first time all day, we felt a sense of relief.
Finally Back to Safety
The train journey covered only about 9 kilometers but felt endless.
When we finally reached the station, Krishna vanished without a trace.
We never saw him again.
From there, we rode back to Calangute and reached our resort around 1:30 AM—exhausted, injured, stressed, and mentally drained.
Looking back, the entire day could have turned out much worse.
What started as a simple waterfall excursion became one of the most stressful travel experiences of our lives.
The biggest lessons we learned were:
- Always research destinations thoroughly before visiting.
- Use only official transportation and authorized tour operators.
- Never trust unofficial guides without proper verification.
- Keep emergency contacts and backup communication options available.
- Inspect rental vehicles carefully before starting a journey.
- Prioritize safety over the fear of missing out.
Travel creates unforgettable memories, but not all memories are pleasant. Sometimes the most valuable travel stories are the ones that teach us important lessons.
Our Dudhsagar trip was not the adventure we had planned—but it became an experience we will never forget.
